VerNetzte NetzschUtzSysteme (Networked Grid Protection Systems) – Adaptive and Networked

Berlin, September 2, 2021 – The PSI Software AG is developing a control-system integrated, adaptive network protection system and testing this in the framework of a 12-month field test in the Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG network region. To that end, PSI is participating in the VeN2uS research project. The research team is dedicated to the testing of an adaptive network protection system and the integration of the network protection in the control system environment.

The research project “Vernetzte Netzschutzsysteme (Networked Grid Protection Systems) – Adaptive and networked“ (VeN2uS), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics (BMWi), commenced on 1 September 2021. Within the framework of the three-year project, the interdisciplinary project consortium will be dealing with the current and future challenges of the electrical grid; with the increased feed-in of electricity from decentralized generation plants such as private photovoltaic systems there are already daily changes in the network topologies. In view of this, the development of possibilities for avoiding network bottlenecks by means of flexible, event-based adjustments of the electrical grid are becoming increasingly important. The VeN2uS project addresses this and pursues the goal of researching and implementing an adaptive and networked grid protection system that adapts the protection parameters in the event of power flow shifts and topology changes and ensures safe power operation.

Along with PSI Software AG, the Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG (consortium lead), the amperias GmbH, LEW Verteilnetz GmbH, OMICRON electronics Deutschland GmbH, SAE IT-systems GmbH & Co. KG, Siemens AG, the  RWTH Aachen Universität with the Institute for Electrical Plants and Grids, Digitalization and Energy as well as the Department for Communication & Distributed Systems, the Department for Electrical Energy Systems of the Friedrich Alexander University and the Institute for Electrical Energy Technology of the Technical University of Hamburg are amongst the 11 partners in the consortium. VeN2uS is funded under the funding code 03EI6053E in the 7th Energy Research Program of the BMWi with approx. 2.7 million euros.

The PSI Group develops its own software products for optimizing the flow of energy and materials for utilities (energy grids, energy trading, public transport) and industry (metals production, automotive, mechanical engineering, logistics). PSI was founded in 1969 and employs more than 2,100 people worldwide.
