Depot and charging management system ensures successful operation of e-buses for six months

Berlin, 10 March 2020 – The depot and charging management system PSIebus successfully controls the new e-bus fleet at the Alsterdorf depot of Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HOCHBAHN). The system has been in operation for about six months and charges the buses with a daily charging capacity of around five megawatts. It sends them charged, cleaned, serviced and pre-conditioned on the blocks that match their remaining range. In the medium term, the first bus depot in Germany designed entirely for e-mobility will have the necessary charging technology and power supply for 240 buses.

Until full e-bus operation, PSIebus ensures in parallel operation with diesel and electric buses that all vehicles start their trip on time and arrive safely back at the depot. The vehicles are dispatched within seconds, with the use of e-buses being prioritized higher.

An integrated load management controls the entire energy requirement of the depot and monitors and controls the individual chargers. The system is optimized so that the vehicles are reliably ready for operation at the beginning of the shift and HOCHBAHN can obtain the energy required for the electric buses. PSIebus avoids unnecessarily high peak loads. This saves costs in the expansion of the power grid and guarantees stable public transport operations.

HOCHBAHN is the second largest public transport company in Germany with four underground lines, 250 underground vehicles, 110 bus lines, almost 1000 buses and around 1.2 million passengers every day.

PSI offers transport companies a unique AI-based system for the efficient monitoring and control of alternatively powered bus fleets. In addition to HOCHBAHN, the French Keolis S.A. relies on PSIebus for e-bus operations in Vélizy near Paris.

Based on its own software products, PSI Group develops and integrates complete solutions for optimizing the flow of energy and materials for utilities (energy networks, energy trading, public transport) and industry (mining, metals production, automotive, mechanical engineering, logistics). PSI was founded in 1969 and employs 2,000 persons worldwide.
